How the aluminium enclosure on a townhouse is opened, how its lock fails and what improves it. 1 October 2026 · 4 min read Walk through the terraced and semi-detached houses of La Zenia, Playa Flamenca or Lomas de Cabo Roig and you will see them everywhere: the front terrace closed in with aluminium and glass, turning a porch into an extra room. Many were added years after the house was built, by whichever installer the owner of the day found. They are wonderful in January. They are also, very often, the weakest door on the house. ## Why the porch is the real front door Once a porch is enclosed, it is the first lock anybody meets. Your solid front door with its good cylinder is now *inside*. Anyone who gets through the porch has a sheltered, hidden space to work on the front door, out of sight of the street. And the porch door itself usually has: - a **hook lock** in the sliding panel, operated by a small key or a thumb turn, designed to keep a door closed rather than to keep a person out; - **one locking point**, halfway up, which leaves the bottom of the panel free to be levered; - **panels that lift**, because sliding doors sit on rollers in a track, and a panel that can be lifted high enough clears its own lock. ## How they fail by themselves Even without anyone testing them, porch doors give trouble on this coast. Sand and dust collect in the bottom track. The rollers wear and the panel drops a few millimetres, so the hook no longer meets its keep: the door closes but will not lock, or locks only when lifted. The sun on south-facing glass expands the frame through the afternoon, and a lock that works at nine in the morning sticks at five. Most of these are alignment problems, not broken locks, and are fixed by adjusting or replacing rollers and keeps. ## What makes a porch genuinely harder to open - **A proper keyed lock** in place of a basic hook, where the profile allows it. - **A second locking point** low on the sliding panel, so it cannot be levered at the bottom. - **Anti-lift blocks** in the top track, so the panel cannot be raised off its rollers. - **Rollers in good condition**, so the lock engages fully instead of just touching. What fits depends on the profile of your enclosure, so a photo of the edge of the door is the first step. ## If it has already been forced A forced porch is reported like any other break-in, and its door is made to lock again before anything else. Then, from outside, try gently to lift the sliding panel. If it moves up noticeably, it can probably be lifted off its lock. Try the bottom corner too. If it flexes away from the frame, it needs a second locking point.
