Why the lock on a garden gate under the pines seizes, what you can safely do about it, and when it needs replacing. 1 October 2026 · 4 min read The Dehesa de Campoamor is the greenest corner of Orihuela Costa: detached houses on generous plots among the pines, running down to the beach of La Glea. It is also the corner where garden gate locks give up first, and the reason is directly overhead. ## What the pines do to a lock A garden gate lock spends its life outdoors, which is hard enough on this coast: strong sun most of the year, a climate dry enough that the dust never really settles, and the occasional storm that drives rain straight into the keyway. Under pines, three more things join in. - **Needles and fine debris** collect in the keyway and in the gap between the latch and the keep. - **Resin** drips and spreads, and once it is inside a cylinder it holds every grain of dust that follows. - **Shade and sun in turn** mean the metal heats and cools unevenly through the day, which is hard on the springs inside a lock. The result is a key that goes in stiffly, turns with a jerk, and one day does not turn at all, usually with the gate shut and you on the wrong side of it. ## Cleaning a gate lock yourself 1. **Blow the keyway out.** A can of compressed air, or a short blast from a bicycle pump, clears loose needles and dust. 2. **Use a dry lubricant.** A graphite powder or a PTFE dry spray made for locks. Avoid oil and general-purpose sprays: they leave a film that resin and dust stick to, and in a few months the lock is worse. 3. **Work the key gently.** Insert and remove it a few times, turning only as far as it goes freely. 4. **Look at the latch and the keep, not just the lock.** If the gate has dropped on its hinges, the latch drags on the keep and the lock gets the blame. ## Two things never to do to a gate lock Do not force a stiff key. Keys snap far more often in gate locks than in front doors, because the lock is already gummed up and the gate is often leaning against it. A key snapped in a gate turns a lubrication job into a call-out. Do not cut or drill the lock to get in unless you have no other way. If the house door is reachable another way, a stuck gate can wait until morning. ## When it needs replacing A gate lock that has been cleaned and lubricated and still binds is usually worn inside, and replacing it costs less than fighting it every week. Outdoor locks with a cover over the keyway last noticeably longer under trees. If the front door and the gate both take euro cylinders, they can often be fitted to work with one key.
